Just finished up the month for my Digital Storytelling class. It was very interesting! I’d never heard of a class like this, and I had a pretty good time with it. Advertising is something that really interests me. The only complaint I have about the past month is that I had a lot of personal stuff get in the way that kept me from really going at some of the assignments with everything I have. My time management has always needed work, but this month was really bad. Anyway, yes. So it was good.
Played my last show with my friend Jason last Friday. He got out of the Air Force and moved down to San Diego. I’m not even sure if he’s going to keep DJing or producing, but it was a blast having him as my partner for the past year. I wish him well in all his endeavors. If everything goes according to the way things are looking, I may be getting out sometime in 2012, which is 3 years earlier than I’m supposed to. I’m okay with that, if it happens. I’ll keep everyone posted on that as I get more info.
Well, I had a rough week. I got behind on my school work because of an office move at my job. I’ve been getting trained up on things I don’t quite know how to do and it’s been killer. I got to go play some music on Friday night with my friend Wrekafekt (Brent Hafner), but I found out late in the evening that I had to be at work at 8AM the next day instead of noon like I was originally told, so I had to leave early. Then, to top it all off, I lost the only key to my car that I have so my car has been sitting in a bar parking lot since Friday night. Luckily, I know the owners of the place so they’re watching my car for me until Tuesday when the dealership will be able to get me a new key.
I was going through my stuff and remembered about my photo blog. I’m not sure if I’ve linked to it before, but it’s here at I Also Take Pictures. I’ll post up a few of my favorite shots from the site below. I’m not sure why, but my header photo that I made for the site has disappeared… Strange.
Edit: I just came across this video, and it’s awesome! I’d love to do something like this, but doing street art makes me nervous… Check it out! Inflatable Monsters
I was afforded the chance to play with some local bands last night, which is strange since I’m a DJ, but it was amazing. Dire Gnosis was the main group playing. It was their CD release party. A while back, I played a show that they were playing at, and they asked me to DJ in between acts at the release show. They’re incredible at what they do. It really brought me back to a time that I forgot about. I used to play in metal bands back in Houston, and last night reminded me of those days. They, along with the band Byleth, really enjoy what I do and want to have me back playing alongside them in the future. This excites to me to NO END, because I’m really burnt out on the club scene and want to be able to try something new. It was so great to be able to play my originals without feeling like I was trying to impress a room full of DJs and dubstep producers. My music isn’t exactly typical of what most people are making these days, so that’s usually an issue. I just loved being able to play music for the sake of music and not worry about everyone scrutinizing my every move.
One of the things I really wanted to mention in this post though was a group that played called I, Titian (pronounced Titan). It’s a genre of performance art that I’d never heard of before called soundscapes. It was two guys, one on a sequencer and one on guitar (or maybe bass…there were a lot of people in front of me), with a screen and projector showing images from old movies and things like that. They played this absolutely beautiful ambient music over top of the visuals. It was truly stunning to watch. Then, they had hand drawn art and hand painted prints for sale in lieu of typical merchandise. It was really awesome to see how they were bridging the gap between the two art styles. It was a very inspiring night all around.
I love music. LOVE LOVE LOVE music. And being a DJ, that’s a good thing. Here’s a link to my personal Soundcloud page with some of my originals on it. I’m still pretty new to the whole electronic music production thing, but I’m really happy with my tracks. Check them out if you get a chance.
I’ve never kept a blog. Not like this anyway. I was an avid LiveJournal user in 2000 and 2001, but I don’t think the word “blog” even existed back then. I do have a couple of Blogspot accounts that I use to post drawings and photography, but I haven’t updated them in forever. So here we sit. This blog is for a class I’m taking, but I’ll hopefully keep using it FOREVER…or at least until I get bored. I’ll try to use this as a way to talk about new design stuff I’ve come across, or to vent about bad design decisions I’ve made/found online. In that respect, expect a lot of complaining about the use of Comic Sans.
I’m also an avid music fan and a local DJ in the electronic dance music scene, so I’ll more than likely talk about that stuff too. I design a lot of flyers for events so I’ll post them up here as I make them.
So let’s get this party started.
